Central to Your Education
Greene County is home to fully accredited public schools. The current total enrollment is 2,810 students. Greene County elects its School Board.
Eighty-two percent of the class of 2007 will continue formal education after graduation. Of these, about 1/2 will attend four-year institutions. The other half will attend community college, specialized trade schools or join the military.
On January 10, 2008 the Virginia Department of Education announced that William Monroe High School met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and made significant progress toward Governor Kaine’s goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunity. William Monroe High School was one of only 51 high schools statewide to earn the award.
William Monroe High School, according the VDOE’s school report card, attained scores of 96% in math, 93% in English, 90% in science, and 94% in social studies with all sub-groups achieving state and federal benchmark requirements. Last year WMHS had an Advanced Placement course enrollment of 325 and a dual enrollment (college credit) enrollment of 77.
The Technical Center provides students an opportunity to develop life skills while improving academic skills, including their performance on the Standard of Learning tests (SOL's). The Tech Center offers secondary, alternative, and post secondary technical training in automotive technology, building trades, child care, cosmetology, family and consumer services, food services, health and medical sciences, and horticulture.
